Should I use a smart camera or a PC-based vision system?

Use a smart camera when one or two stable checks run on a single view at moderate speed, the surface is cooperative, and the line needs only a pass/fail signal. Use a PC-based architecture when you need multiple synchronized cameras, high sustained bandwidth, heavy or custom image processing, learned models, long image retention, or tight integration with MES and quality systems.

Where a smart camera wins

  • Lower installed cost and much simpler cabinet, wiring and commissioning.
  • Maintenance staff can often support it with vendor training already in the plant.
  • Deterministic, self-contained behavior with few software dependencies to patch.
  • Fast deployment when the imaging is genuinely easy.

Where PC-based wins

  • Multi-camera synchronization and shared timing across a station.
  • Line-scan and high-rate acquisition that exceeds embedded processing.
  • Custom algorithms, model inference and the ability to change approach without changing hardware.
  • Image and result archives for audits, plus dashboards and traceability.
  • Long-term flexibility: adding checks does not mean buying another sensor.

Total-cost honesty

A PC-based system carries obligations a smart camera does not: OS lifecycle, security patching, spares strategy, backup and restore of recipes, and someone who owns the software. Those are real costs. If the inspection does not need the flexibility, do not buy the obligation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start with a smart camera and migrate later?
Often yes, if you keep the mechanical mounting, lighting and trigger design generic. The optics and lighting work usually transfers; the configuration does not.
Is a smart camera less accurate?
Not inherently. Accuracy comes from optics, lighting and resolution. Smart cameras are limited more by processing headroom, algorithm flexibility and data handling than by measurement capability.
