What is the difference between GigE Vision and USB3 Vision?
USB3 Vision offers higher per-camera bandwidth than 1 GigE but is limited to short passive cable runs (commonly around 3-5 m without active cabling) and typically one camera per host controller for full throughput. GigE Vision offers long cable runs over standard Ethernet, easy multi-camera topologies through switches, and Power over Ethernet options, at lower per-link bandwidth unless you move to 10GigE.

- You have multiple cameras and want predictable cabling and switching.
- PoE simplifies the harness, or you want standard, field-replaceable cables.
- Move to 10GigE when 1 GigE bandwidth becomes the constraint but cabling advantages must be kept.
What both standards do not solve
Neither interface guarantees deterministic timing. If part position matters, trigger in hardware from an encoder or photo-eye and treat the interface as a transport for pixels, not a timing source.

- Can I run four USB3 cameras from one industrial PC?
- Physically often yes; at full frame rate usually no. Multiple USB3 cameras contend for host controller bandwidth. Distributing them across separate controllers, or moving to GigE, is the reliable path.
- Do I need a frame grabber for either?
- No. Both are host-interface standards. Frame grabbers come into play with Camera Link and CoaXPress, typically for high-rate line scan.
